Portuguese detectives insist McCann statements were not leaked

Statements made by Kate and Gerry McCann about missing daughter Madeleine were not leaked to a Spanish TV station, Portuguese detectives insisted yesterday.

In a rare public statement, the Policia Judiciaria described as “baseless” claims by the couple’s spokesman Clarence Mitchell that the transcripts had been deliberately sent to Telecinco.

Mitchell demanded a probe after the interviews – which revealed Madeline asked why she’d been left crying the night before she vanished – were aired as the McCanns visited the European Parliament and their Tapas 7 friends were being quizzed by UK police.

The statement said it was “entirely false” that the PJ was responsible and that Telecinco had “exclusive access”.

Last night, Mitchell said: “I’m not retracting a word.”
